About the brand and the journey...

Thalen - A house built around experience

Most body care is bought on its ingredient list and used in the dark. It sits on a ledge, gets reached for wet-handed, does its job, and asks nothing at all of the person using it. We thought there was something worth doing in the other direction.

Thalen crafts body and personal care in which the experience is composed with the same care as the formula. Five compositions so far, across two formats. It is a small range, deliberately.

EXPERIENCE FIRST

The part most brands add last

In most body care, the experience, the fragrance, the texture arrives at the end. A brief goes out once the formula is fixed, and the composition is judged on whether it covers the smell of the base. We work the other way around: the experience goes hand in hand with the formulation.

That order has consequences. It means we make fewer things. It means a cleanser and a lotion can be designed to sit together rather than compete — teakwood and cardamom in the shower, something brighter afterwards, or the same register held throughout. And it means the fragrance has to be good enough to justify the arrangement, which is a useful discipline to be under.

Our fragrances are compounded in conformity with IFRA standards. Past that, they are judged the only way fragrance can be judged: on skin, across a day, by people who will say plainly when something is not working.

FORMULATION

The other half of the argument

A fragrance is only ever as good as what carries it. Our cleansers use SLS-free surfactants and are formulated without parabens, alcohol, mineral oil, silicones or formaldehyde. The lotions are formulated without sulphates, dyes or formaldehyde. Everything is pH-balanced, vegan and cruelty-free.

We would rather state that plainly than build a case out of it. There is a version of this category that sells by telling you what to be frightened of, and we have no appetite for it. These are the choices we made. They are not a verdict on anyone else's.

Testing is carried out in vivo at Mascot Spincontrol clinical research centres, on volunteers with sensitive skin, under an ethics-committee-approved protocol. The results for each product are published in full.

MADE

Indian in origin, international in sensibility

Thalen is made in India. The formulations are produced in Baddi, in the Himalayan foothills of Himachal Pradesh; while the company HQ sits not so far. Neither fact is decorative. This is where the work happens, and where we can be in the room while it does.

We are not making an Indian brand in the sense the category usually means it — no heritage framing, no ancient-wisdom copy, no turmeric presented as a story about the past. Turmeric is in the cleansers because it earns its place in the formula. The origin is simply true, and does not need dressing.

PRINCIPLES

What we've decided against

A brand is partly a list of refusals. Ours, so far:

No fear. We will not tell you an ingredient is harming you in order to sell you the absence of it.

No superlatives we cannot support. No finest, no purest, no most advanced.

No claim without a document behind it.

No range extension for its own sake. Five products is not a shortfall we are apologising for.

And no pretending the packaging is solved. Our bottles are 50% recycled PET. The pump is not yet recyclable, and we have not found a replacement that lasts as long as the one it would replace. We would rather say so than leave it out.

None of this is a philosophy so much as a set of habits, held to long enough that they begin to resemble one. What we would like is for a Thalen bottle to be the kind of object you keep rather than finish and forget — and for the half-hour it belongs to, the unremarkable one at either end of the day, to be slightly better for it.
